About the Team

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service's Protection Team plays a critical role in keeping people, property and businesses in Gloucestershire safe. Our Fire Safety Inspectors help ensure compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order by carrying out inspections of a wide range of premises, responding to fire safety concerns, and taking enforcement action where necessary. Through a proactive approach to regulation, risk management and partnership working, we help reduce fire risk, improve public safety and support safer communities throughout Gloucestershire.

About the Role

As a Grade 8 Fire Safety Inspector, you will play a key role in protecting communities across Gloucestershire by enforcing fire safety legislation and supporting businesses to meet their legal responsibilities. You will carry out inspections of a wide range of premises as part of our Risk-Based Inspection Programme, investigate fire safety concerns, undertake post-fire inspections, and take enforcement action where required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

The role also includes assessing Building Regulations consultations and licensing applications, contributing specialist fire safety advice to ensure risks are effectively managed. You may be involved in investigations and prosecutions where serious breaches of fire safety legislation are identified, helping to secure safer outcomes for the people of Gloucestershire.

Working across the county, you will represent the Service at meetings with partners, stakeholders and responsible persons, providing professional advice and acting as a trusted representative of Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service. You will also provide technical expertise and support to colleagues and other departments, helping to maintain high standards of fire safety regulation and community protection

In addition to the above, Grade 9 Inspectors provide out-of-hours cover on a rota basis, responding to fire safety matters during evenings, weekends and public holidays. This may include attending incidents, assessing serious fire safety risks, and considering the need for immediate enforcement action to protect relevant persons from harm.

These roles require regular travel and flexibility to work across the county of Gloucestershire, engaging with a diverse range of premises, businesses and partner agencies.

About You

We are looking for a highly motivated and professional Fire Safety Inspector who holds a Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety and has a strong understanding of fire safety legislation and its practical application. You will be confident working independently, managing your own workload, and making informed decisions, while also being an effective team player who contributes positively to the wider Protection Team.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a wide range of people, including members of the public, businesses, colleagues at all levels of the Service, and partner agencies and stakeholders. You will be comfortable building positive working relationships, providing clear advice, and supporting compliance with fire safety legislation.

A commitment to continuous professional development is essential. You will actively maintain and enhance your competence through regular CPD activities, keeping up to date with changes in legislation, guidance and best practice.
